TommyTuneWhen Tommy Tune dances onto the Majestic Theater stage Nov. 18 with his Steps in Time: A Broadway Biography in Song and Dance, the show should be swell. Tune, a Texas native and nine-time Tony award winner, and his long-time collaborators, the Manhattan Rhythm Kings, put on the quintessential Broadway spectacular, as the title suggests.

But the one-night-only performance has meaning that goes far beyond this rousing Broadway blockbuster. It’s about San Antonio’s place as a city of arts, and the future of our most creative young men and women.

That’s because Tune’s show is more than a show.

BillHeinrich“Confession is good for the soul.”

When UT Health Science Center-SA prez Dr. Bill Henrich started his remarks at the University of Texas Health Science Center’s Gala for the Future of Health, dressed-up dinner guests put down their forks and pricked up their ears. You could have heard a pin drop. Then came the confession: “I am an Ed Whitacre groupie,” Henrich enthused.

“Everywhere Ed Whitacre goes he makes good things happen. Everything he touches turns to gold. And tonight, I propose you all join with me in nominating Ed Whitacre to run everything in the world.”

Ricardo-RomoAs Mexico celebrates 200 years of independence and the centennial of the Mexican Revolution this fall, S.A. is celebrating, too. Scores of events here in town underscore how deeply S.A.’s history is intertwined with Mexico’s. That shared history is the key to Children of the Revolución, a powerful new show on KLRN-TV.  Produced and hosted by Hispanic advertising icon Lionel Sosa, his wife Kathy and S.A.-based My Story production company, the show is a new take on a cross-border history lesson many S.A. families have been passing down for generations, about ancestors who came here to escape the violence that swept Mexico during the 1910-1917 revolution.

The first episode features the story of how UTSA prez Ricardo Romo’s family fled to find safe haven in S.A. in the early 1900s. It premiered for a packed house of invited guests at the McNay Art Museum in mid-September, just days before its on-air debut. KLRN prez Bill Moll said the first four episodes would air during Hispanic Heritage Month, and urged the preview guests to “put on your thinking caps” about finding funds to keep the show going in the future.  You can see the episodes already produced on www.klrn.org, featuring Henry Cisneros and his mom Elvira Munguia Cisneros, and auto mogul Charles Barrett, sharing stories of how their respective families found safe haven, then set down roots, in S.A.  An episode on pioneering physician Dr. Robert Treviño’s family saga airs at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, and will also be available online afterward. Let’s hope the series finds generous sponsors. It’s a fascinating new look at our own city’s history, and how the massive influx of immigrants pushing north to escape Mexico’s turmoil wound up changing the face of our city for good.
